Ami has extensive experience working in domestic and sexual violence advocacy roles. She has seen firsthand the failings of various systems, which is one of the reasons she decided to run for office.

Ami supports programs and policies that help prevent sexual and domestic violence. She supports background checks on all gun purchases as well as extreme risk protection orders to keep guns out of the hands of people who may harm themselves or others. Ami wants to ensure that our justice system works for everyone and that we all feel safe in our communities.

Ami is passionate about making systems work better for victim/survivors of violence. During her first term as a legislator, she authored legislation that expands the definition of authority figure in cases of criminal sexual misconduct with minors. Her bill established a 120 day look-back period for determining if a perpetrator was in a position of authority.  This legislation was approved as part of the public safety budget and was signed into law by Governor Walz.

Ami also co-authored related legislation, including bills that would:

• Make it easier for victims to obtain justice in sexual harassment cases by changing the definition of sexual harassment to remove the severe and pervasive standard
• Repeal the marital rape exception*
• Create a Task Force on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women*
• Create a working group to re-write our Criminal Sexual Conduct statutes*
• Establish a domestic violence and sexual assault prevention program*
• Require background checks on all firearms purchases

Ami also supported bipartisan police reform legislation*, efforts to test rape kits, funding for the BCA crime lab, and workers comp for first responders exposed to COVID-19*.
